Away from Agra and a six hour drive to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri. Winnie was with us until the abandoned Mugal city and was as informative, amusing and over the top as ever. Fatehpur Sikri was spectacular but it was a bit like flying with an exit row seat after the business class of the Taj.
Onto the Pink City and The Palace of the Winds
On to Amber Fort which I fully expected to be Amber, but it referred to geographical location not colour. It was a bit of a hike up but there was alternative local transportation.
The Hall of Mirrors was utterly unique and captivating. Tens of thousands of convex mirrors arranged mosaic like on the ceilings and walls of a pavilion was spectacular. Summoning his inner Winnie, Mohindrar, our guide said that the Maharajah had ‘wanted to give his wife a view of the stars every night’. We didn’t have candles and darkness and I’m unclear about which of the 20 wives he was referring to but we were captivated
